Caring for lemon in pots

Lemon is one of the most popular fruits. Even if it is not commonly consumed, it is a fundamental element of many dishes and recipes, both salty and sweet. If you want to enjoy the flavor and freshness of some organic lemons, it is best to plant them at home, in a pot.

Lemon is a plant that can grow very healthy in pots, not only in the garden, if you follow a series of care tips.

How to care for a lemon in a pot

The lemon tree is a relatively easy plant to maintain, at least if we consider that it is a fruit tree, which usually needs to be planted directly on the ground to bear fruit. On the contrary, the lemon is a plant that adapts well to life in a pot, as long as it has the right dimensions.

The size of the lemon pot

The first thing we will take into account is the size and shape of the pot. It is important that the lemon be planted in a pot as large as possible, in order to have a lot of space. He needs a vessel with a diameter of at least 30 centimeters. Also, in order to grow healthily, the pot in which we plant the lemon must be deep. This will allow the roots to grow evenly, one of the basic characteristics of the lemon tree.

Lemon irrigation

In terms of irrigation, lemon is a tree that needs a lot of water, but without the soil being flooded, as it could lead to root rot. In this way, it is advisable to water it once every 2 days in spring and summer, and once a week in winter.

However, if we want to make sure it is the right time for irrigation, touch the surface of the soil with your fingers. If the substrate is still wet, we can wait another day or two before it gets wet. It is also very important to prevent the accumulation of excess water in the bottom plate of the vessel. After about 15 minutes after watering, it is best to remove excess water.

Cut the lemon

As for pruning, the lemon should be cut in late fall, when it enters a hibernation state. It is recommended to cut dry or weaker branches, as well as those that grow excessively and that can make it difficult for the plant to maintain proper proportions.

How many hours of light does the lemon need?

Another important aspect to consider when caring for lemon is light. This plant needs direct and abundant light. Thus, the pot should be placed in a place where the sun reaches at least 5-6 hours a day.

Lemon fertilizer

As for fertilizer, you can add it once a year, in the spring. It is recommended to add a special fertilizer for citrus.

Temperatures that the lemon can withstand

Finally, it should be noted that lemon is a plant that tolerates cold temperatures relatively well. In fact, you can reach frosts around -1 or -2 degrees. However, all temperatures that are lower than these could kill the tree. So, if we are in regions where temperatures are lower in winter, it is best to move the pot to a space with milder temperatures.
